Frequency of Eye Examinations

An eye examination involves a detailed assessment carried out by a specialist eye doctor. This examination not only evaluates the current vision status but also helps to detect vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Eye exams are crucial for early diagnosis of other vision issues through various tests, such as checking for the need for glasses or contact lenses, monitoring intraocular pressure, examining the optic nerve, and evaluating the cornea and lens.
Eye Examination During Infancy and Childhood
In newborns, the sense of vision is not fully developed, and this process usually continues until the age of four. The most common eye problems during this period include refractive errors, strabismus (crossed eyes), and amblyopia (lazy eye). Early detection of amblyopia is vital to prevent permanent vision damage in the future. Therefore, even if no eye problems are observed, it is highly recommended to have the first eye examination for infants within 6-9 months after birth.
For children undergoing treatment or using glasses, it is advised to have an eye examination at least once a year. For children without any eye problems, an eye exam every two years may suffice, but in case of any abnormal signs or symptoms, consulting a specialist is crucial. Eye problems that go unnoticed at an early stage can lead to much more serious eye issues or permanent vision loss in later years. Hence, regular eye examinations are of great importance in supporting healthy eye development in children.
Eye Examination in Adults
Eye examinations are essential to maintaining healthy vision and detecting potential eye issues at an early stage. According to the general recommendation of the American Optometric Association, adults should have a routine eye examination every two years. This frequency may vary depending on the individual’s health condition, age, genetic factors, and existing eye problems.
People of all age groups can protect their eye health through regular eye exams. Individuals over the age of 65, and those at increased risk for eye diseases due to aging, should have more frequent eye exams. Likewise, regular eye check-ups are important for those with a family history of eye diseases or genetic risk factors.
Eye examinations generally include vision tests, intraocular pressure measurement, eye scanning, and both internal and external eye assessments. Vision tests play a key role in evaluating visual acuity and refractive status, while intraocular pressure measurement is crucial for early detection of glaucoma. An internal eye examination (fundoscopy) provides a detailed evaluation of the retina, blood vessels, and optic nerve. During the external examination, areas such as the eyelids, conjunctiva, and sclera are inspected. Additionally, eye scanning aims to detect abnormalities in the anterior part of the eye.
Eye examinations not only provide information about visual capability but also offer insights into overall health. Regular eye exams help protect eye health, allow early intervention for potential issues, and contribute to an improved quality of life.
