How long can you wait before seeing a doctor for eye infections (conjunctivitis)?
Eye infection, medically known as conjunctivitis, is a condition that occurs when the thin and transparent membrane covering the eyes, called the conjunctiva, becomes inflamed. This condition usually presents with symptoms such as discomfort, redness, watering, stinging, sensitivity to light, and swelling around the eyelids. The conjunctiva, which covers both the white part of the eyes and the inner surface of the eyelids, can become inflamed for various reasons, and in some cases, it can be highly contagious.
Generally, eye infections do not require specific treatment. They usually resolve on their own within 7 to 20 days. However, in some cases, especially if symptoms like eye discharge, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light are present, it is important to consult an eye doctor promptly.
The microbes causing eye infections are usually bacteria or viruses. However, allergic reactions or incomplete opening of the tear duct in newborns can also cause the symptoms of the disease. Newborns are particularly vulnerable to microbes that can come from the birth canal, which may lead to serious complications; therefore, it is crucial to treat such cases urgently.
Infectious eye conditions are common among children, especially during certain periods. It can quickly spread among children in shared environments such as schools and classrooms, potentially leading to outbreaks. Simple preventive measures to avoid the spread of the disease include frequent handwashing with soap, avoiding touching the eyes with hands, not sharing towels, using disposable paper towels, avoiding the shared use of objects that come into contact with the eyes and hands, and refraining from the random use of eye medications.
In conclusion, eye infections generally do not require treatment, but if the symptoms are severe or occur in newborns, it is essential to consult an eye doctor. Additionally, taking hygienic precautions is important to prevent the spread of the disease.
